Inquiry Project

On the second day B was the only child who came to Headstart. He spent his morning going around reading his books ” How do dinosaurs say good night?”. At one point he didn’t want to interact with toys or books, so I decided I will take out the wooden train track and build a track for him. Once B noticed he came over picked up a train and around the tracks he went.

Being the only child at school, they get one on one with the Early Childhood Educators who focus on the best interest of the child such as demonstrating how to share, compromise and showing consideration for others.

As an ECE they’ll provided opportunities for the child to encourage laughter, engaging conversations, and building trust by modeling healthy behavior, learning about the child’s interest, challenges and ambitions.

“Children who receive enough positive attention are less likely to seek attention in a negative way.”

Finger Painting Friday morning

you can tell C enjoying finger painting, she’s always right into it and being very creative with all her colors by experimenting with mixing colors, creating shapes, and developing her artistic skills. C is also learning to control pressure, movement and better control over her fine motor skills.

Arts and Crafts in the morning is great way to start because it benefits our mental health such as improve mood, reduce stress, and boost self-esteem, develop our motor skills, social skills, and patience.

Blowing bubbles with C and B. We enjoyed playing with bubbles in the cold weather.

we caught a couple bubbles to see how the cold weather was affecting them. The bubbles will last a few seconds once the frost started to form they burst and the frost would fall to the ground.

The frost from the bubbles reminded me when you put liquid glue on the hand to let it dry and peel it off and its like you were peeling off a layer of skin.

Playing with the bells was music to the ears, and lovely how they all made their own unique sound. Now if only we know how to play a song it would be awesome like “Mary had a little lamb” or “twinkle twinkle little start”. something the children would enjoy or already know.

Bike riding is fun and educational

Playing outside on the bikes is great way to socialized with others by expressing our feelings, respond and cooperating with others that are riding. At first B was just sitting by himself on the bike. So I jumped on the big bike started biking around him and not long after B started to follow and C jumped on behind me.

Biking helps children in developing their core, leg muscles, and practicing their balance. They’ll pay attention, focus on tasks, and provides opportunities of communication skills such as listening to directions, asking for help and celebrating success. Of course there will be a times where we will need to assist those who have falling or lost balance.

Topics and Activities of the month

Every month Laurel & Rupinder will choose a topic and activities to support child’s development. By selecting a theme such as holiday, animals, or any category that interests the children. Once picked they could incorporate the theme into multiple lessons and activities. These activities encourage physical growth, and develop self-care skills

Educators like to organize their curriculum monthly themes by creating an outline of activities, materials, objectives for each day. It can be a great way to learn about a topic and each week you’re digging deep into that concept. By doing this educators are understanding the children , consult curriculum guideline, choose engaging activities, allocate appropriate time, plan for transitions, and preparing necessary materials for each topic and activity. Also writing up invitations to special events or holidays for parents to attend with their children.

Playing with snow

On this snowy day C and B are using the imagination to find different ways to play, since all the playground equipment were either frozen or covered in snow. So the children got creativity by making snow balls, then throwing them on top of the hill to watch them roll back down to them. A great way for them to exercise their creativity and to find other ways to play with snow.

Final Reflections :

You are really making the most of this practicum with very few children Lora. I can see that you were taking note of what the children were interested in, what was happening outside with the weather and the time of year as focus for your activities.

Goals for next practicum:

  1. To experience more of a small group of children and to guide and care challenging behavior.
  2. To build up your resources
  3. To plan, implement and add to a small project
